At William’s Purebreed Border Collies, our family’s connection to dogs—and to the Border Collie breed in particular—spans generations. Our breeding journey was formally reestablished in the 1970s, during a time when purebred Border Collies were still uncommon in the region. This long-standing involvement has allowed us to develop a deep understanding of the breed’s intelligence, temperament, and working instincts.
Our appreciation for the Border Collie traces back to our great-great-grandfather, Walter, born in 1879. As a dedicated forest ranger in Germany, he worked closely with dogs of many breeds but held a special respect for Border Collies, which were both working partners and trusted companions throughout his life. While much of this early history was never formally documented, the values of responsible breeding, respect for working ability, and close human–dog bonds have been passed down through generations and continue to guide our program today.
The Border Collie is a generally healthy and resilient breed, with an average lifespan of 12 to 16 years when properly cared for. A balanced, high-quality diet combined with regular physical and mental exercise is essential to maintaining strong muscle tone and overall wellbeing.
To reduce the risk of injury, particularly to the spine, it is important to keep Border Collies at a healthy weight and provide appropriate, structured activity. As with all breeds, routine health care is essential—this includes regular ear cleaning to help prevent infections, along with ongoing monitoring of mobility, fitness, and general condition.
With proper care, training, and engagement, the Border Collie thrives as both a capable working dog and a loyal, devoted companion.
